Sporting Activity in Launceston, 1880-1960

Monday 2 Apr to Wednesday 2 May
Lawrence House Museum

The costumes photographed form part of Lawrence House Museum’s Sports exhibition. Complementing the costumes are sports equipment, photographs, Olympic posters and trophies.
Photographs trace the development of Rugby football in Launceston from the 1890s to the Cornish All Blacks today.
Trophies include the Sunlight Cup engraved with the players’ names, presented to Launceston Football Club by Lever Brothers in 1894.
Early photos of Victorian croquet with gentlemen in top hats, Edwardian tennis, swimming in the 1920s at the Jubilee Baths, and Tug of War (once an Olympic sport) are also featured.
